Remote Traveller Processing Pilot extends hours of operation

In January 2016, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) implemented a remote traveller processing (RTP) pilot project at the Morses Line, Quebec port of entry (POE).  Travellers arriving at the POE after staffed hours of service are now processed by a Border Services Officer (BSO) located at an off-site remote monitoring centre, in Hamilton, Ontario. At the POE, there is now a kiosk equipped with two-way audio and one-way video technology, as well as a document reader. Enhanced infrastructure and equipment, including closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, LED signage, license plate reader, remotely-operated impact-resistant gates and additional lighting have also been installed to support remote traveller processing.

Using a combination of staffed hours of service as well as RTP hours of service, this pilot offers travellers 24/7 access to the border. Since its implementation, there has been a steady increase in the number of travellers using RTP. Early results suggest that the RTP solution is an effective, viable alternative to processing travellers, while maintaining border integrity.
